Gaborone, Botswana - 10 April 2025: His Excellency Mr. Elias M. Magosi, the Executive Secretary (ES) of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), officially received letters of credence from His Excellency Mr. Paul Amoru, the recently appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative-designate of the Republic of Uganda to SADC. Ambassador Amoru is also Uganda’s non-resident High Commissioner to the Republic of Botswana.
The appointment of Ambassador Amoru reflects Uganda’s firm commitment to the core principles of SADC - unity, regional integration and sustainable development across the African Continent.
As a dedicated member of both the East African Community (EAC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Uganda remains a vital stakeholder in promoting the African agenda, particularly in the areas of peace, security and sustainable development.
H.E. Magosi congratulated Ambassador Amoru on his appointment and extended a warm welcome to the SADC region. He also expressed appreciation to the Government of Uganda, under the leadership of His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for the constructive role in promoting peace and security, particularly in relation to the ongoing efforts to stabilise the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is currently affected by conflict with the M23 group.
“The situation in the DRC remains critical for both SADC and East African Community (EAC). I am encouraged by the Government of Uganda’s engagement through the EAC in supporting efforts to create the conditions for constructive dialogue and the implementation of a comprehensive peace agreement,” said H.E. Magosi.
He also acknowledged Uganda’s active role in the SADC-EAC-COMESA Tripartite Free Trade Area (FTA) framework, which contributes significantly to the African Union’s broader objectives of accelerating economic integration, fostering sustainable development, reducing poverty, and improving the quality of life for the people of the Eastern and Southern African region.
Ambassador Amoru expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to deepening diplomatic cooperation and strengthening relations with the SADC region.
“Uganda is deeply committed to the spirit of Pan-Africanism and seeks to pursue innovative, home-grown solutions to our shared challenges,” he stated.
Ambassador Amoru further highlighted key areas for future collaboration, including conflict resolution, economic empowerment, youth and women’s advancement, combating the HIV epidemic, and addressing climate change - essential pillars for achieving a prosperous and resilient Africa.
